Russell ordered a standard 9m trailer to build the largest legal cabin on top. He does not plan to move it off site, so only purchased it with one axle, but axle mounts for more. He chose to paint it himself.

As a first-timer, it was a learning experience for him as he worked with SFD to get the most configuration while staying within the NZTA limits for an oversized payload.

Precision of measurements was a concern as well, where Rob explained what requires more precision (alignment on the road) and what requires less (alignment of payload). The cabin is the payload that overlaps the trailer, where overlap is important to ensure rain runs off to the ground so it does not pool and eventually rust the trailer. Once this was explained to Russell, he got it and the Boxtrailer drawings for future customers were revised to show allowable tolerances.

Russell ordered a mezzanine sized cabin frame

Russell chose to have SFD deliver the frames on their trailer.

9m mobile home trailer:

  • Standard size 9×2.5 plus removable drawbar
  • Steel Frame Direct (SFD) to specify where Rob to cut holes in Universal Beams to match floor
  • Mounting holes are offset from centre on outside of Universal Beam rails, 1963 Ø mm separation
  • One unbraked axle aft of 60/40 weight distribution point
    • ACEPNBT Straight Axle Non-Braked 1.75T HCH 50×5 Pregal 5×4.5 HF:2430 SC:1952 Cust: ECOCON
    • S3216 Spring set 6L, 1500 kg / pr painted, complete
    • X3758 Rim/tyre assy 195/50 R13C 5 x 4 1/2″ 13 x 5.5″ galv rim
    • C2790 3500 kg electric coupling incl handbrake 1 7/8″
  • Four sets of axle hangers
  • 50mm coupling
  • No paint, Russell will paint after taking possession
  • No guards or lights – Rob will provide loaner for one wheel to pass WOF

Notes:

  • If Russell later want to add more axles, at least one must be braked…
    • same as above plus Traiparts parts for braked axle as follows:
    • ACEPBT Straight Axle 10″ Elec 1.75T HCH 50×5 Pregal 5×4.5 HF:2430 SC:1952Cust: ECOCON
    • B312610 Mechanical cable brake kit complete, 1 axle 10m
    • BS35BTK Trailparts Breakaway kit, Test Box, 5 A/hr Batt, B/A switch

Notes:

  • Drawing shows SFD cabin outline for convenience. In ordering width from SFD, remember to ensure maximum width, including fixtures does not exceed 3.1m (see NZTA over-width rules)
  • We recommend 2.9 wide SFD frame to allow for cavity battens, cladding and joinery trim, to approx 3m width, allowing 50mm per side for fixtures. If fixtures are wider, reduce SFD width
  • Please see https://steelframesdirect.nz/box-trailers/ for the specific design. SFD can reprogram openings, such as fitting pre-acquired joinery.
  • We recommend the SFD 150mm floor kit (part of the design on the link) to provide rigidity when jacking up the cabin as an attached payload which is a legal Cat 1 oversize. If cabin is part of trailer and over 2.5m it is illegal on the road
  • Loaner guards and loaner light kit
  • You supply Rego
  • Rob arranges WOF after you have delivered rego plate (necessary to be on trailer for WOF)
  • Ready to tow away
  • Return lights and guards within one week please
